ANDEAN DECORATIVE BIRD - Tamo art - Wood decorated with wheat and barley stalks (straw marquetry)
Estimated delivery date in Europe (Day/Month): 00/00 - 00/00
We present our Andean decorative bird, an elegant and stylish piece handcrafted in Colombia on treated solid wood and adorned with the fascinating tamo technique. This ancestral art transforms the stalks of wheat and barley to veneer figures with highly detailed patterns. The process includes boiling, dyeing, drying, and flattening the stalks into fine sheets. These sheets are then cut into very thin, uniform strands, which are meticulously applied, one by one, onto the wood surface. It is a very fine technique that demands great patience, precision, and dedication. Our artisans have preserved this tradition for generations, keeping alive an art form typical of their department, Nariño, in southwestern Colombia, a place of great cultural richness ranging from handcrafts with various natural fibers to the vibrant "Carnaval de Negros y Blancos" (Black and White Carnival), recognized by UNESCO and celebrated every January.
