Our MARIPOSA earrings are handcrafted by experienced Colombian artisans using tagua (vegetable ivory), a rock-hard seed from a palm tree endemic to the pacific coast of South America. This exceptional material, scientifically named Phytelephas (elephant plant), matures from a liquid state into a solid, highly resilient, and creamy-white substance that is remarkably durable and closely resembles ivory. Its unique qualities allow it to be carved into various objects, polished, and dyed. These characteristics make tagua an ideal, sustainable, and ethical substitute to animal ivory. In Colombia, its harvest doesn't harm the trees and stimulates local economies, being used in jewelry, buttons, and ornaments, while also serving as a significant alternative to deforestation for farming. The earrings are completed with a top in 24K gold-plated pewter and a cataphoretic lacquer finish for enhanced durability and radiance.

 MATERIALS: Tagua (vegetable ivory) with a polished finish. The dark, brown areas are part of the seed's natural skin, left untouched to highlight these earrings' unique organic design. The top is 24K gold-plated pewter with a protective cataphoretic lacquer finish. This jewelry is gold-plated, not solid gold. Gold plating offers the look of fine jewelry at an affordable price, but it can wear off over time, especially with daily or intensive use.
